There is no doubt that China has arrived in the modern age. It has a functionally differentiated society, a dynamic and innovative economy, an efficient administration and is subject to an open process of permanent self-change. However, it is equally clear that a novel version of modernity has unfolded in the People's Republic, which has developed through other historical struggles, other contradictions and crises, other cultural values and geopolitical constraints, and seems to end the Western monopoly on modernity that has been hegemonic for more than 200 years.
China's path of modernization makes it possible to reflect on the theory of Western modernity. What are the characteristics of modernity, and to what extent does China's path represent a change and a decisive transformation of modernity itself?
China has a long history of the socialist legacy of the revolution and the emergence and transformation of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Under current conditions, how might the examination of intellectual sources and perspectives of this history offer new theoretical and practical points of reference for alternative conceptions of modernity? In short, how can socialism be rethought and discussed on the basis of modernity?
